Buffalo Log Roundup
Before the recent Buffalo Demo Day, we had to round up some logs for cutting on the sawmills. Steve had found a landowner that had advertised logs "free for the taking" on Craiglist, so we headed for that location with our van and trailer and cant hooks. After some major navigating we found the logs next to a driveway just as the landowner had said they would be. He had a nice stand of straight trees next to his house and was apparently doing some clearing to make way for more yard. He had the logs laid across each other, so it was our job to untangle them and get them loaded. The log loader we had hoped for was no where to be seen on the property.
After positioning the trailer, we were able to use two 4X6 beams we had brought along with us as a loading ramp and we took several of the logs up the ramp and into the trailer. The logs happened to be horizontal to the trailer. The others that were perpendicular, we had to reposition so we could load them. We quickly put the Ford Econoline 350 Van into "skidder" mode and used it to pull the logs out of the pile and then backed the trailer down where we could load them.
Mike, from Norwood was along with us, and we found, since we had three people, that with two on the cant hooks and one standing on the trailer pulling the log with a strap tied to the trailer worked best. We loaded several logs that way. We managed to get all the millable sized logs on the trailer and we headed back to town with a nice load of logs.
