Guilty DogDoes this dog look guilty?  We caught him slipping away with a big juicy peach the other day!  It reminded me of when another dog of mine grabbed some food and made away with it.  

One year, I invited the President of Logosol, Inc. to my farm to eat a big Thanksgiving meal.  He is from Sweden and this would be his first Thanksgiving in the USA.  I wanted to make sure he had some good Thanksgiving food to enjoy for lunch.  We always have a lot of people to attend our Thanksgiving meal at our farm and this year we had planned to have two turkeys, one which I was to cook outside on my homemade Barbeque Pit, and one that Kathleen was cooking inside in the electric oven.  I took great care to build the fire up just right the night before in the pit with hand selected hickory, and prepped the turkey with spices before carefully placing it on the grill and roasting it throughout the evening.  I made the fire so it would burn out about the right time when the meat was cooked and left it to soak up the smoke for the night.  I had a metal plate on top and one propped against the front so it would be protected.  When I last checked it was looking great and smelling wonderful.

The next morning I was up early and the first thing I did was look out the window at the pit where I had left the turkey the night before.  As I turned away from the window, I thought, "something doesn't look right."  I quickly went out in the crisp morning air and found the metal had fallen away from the pit.  And then I got worried that something had gotten to my beautiful turkey!  Sure enough I made it to pit and there was no turkey to be found!  I looked around and found my large German Shepard/Akita mix dog lying lazily with a guilty look on her face.  She had devoured the whole turkey - smoked and spiced perfectly - she had eaten the whole thing sometime during the night.

It wouldn't have been so bad if I had not been telling the President how wonderful the smoked turkey would be and that I was preparing it just for him.  I had to greet him with the news that during the night a thief had stolen my turkey and that we would be short one turkey for Thanksgiving.  I introduced him to "Honey Bear", the thief that had enjoyed his turkey, who was still full from the evening's feast and still had a guilty look on her face.  Fortunately my wife always makes a traditional roasted turkey that is delicious, and we never knew the other turkey was missing.  Honey Bear slept the whole day with a smile on her face...
