Snow and a portable sawmill

A warmer climate has made it difficult for Kristin Jauch to train in dog sledding back home in Germany. Thanks to the family’s house in Dalarna, they’ve been able to get down to some serious training.

Kristin Jauch moved to Sweden because she needed great snow-covered expanses for her training. She can now call herself one of Europe’s leading female dog sled racers, whilst she and her family can also call themselves sawmill operators, having undertaken many a project with their Logosol sawmill .

-We only use wood we have cut ourselves, says Meino Jauch, here seen in the process of building a surround for his well. .

Kristina Jauch puts the finishing touches on the little construction, using a colour that in Germany goes by the name of Sweden Red.

Kristin Jauch is a competitive dog sled racer, a sport that demands wide, snow-covered expanses. There have not been sufficient amounts of snow on her German homegrounds over the last few years. When Kristin and her husband Meino bought a house in Sweden’s Dalarna region, they were able to get down to training for real. Today Kristin Jauch has won her place as a European Master dog sled racer and has taken the silver medal in the World Masters Games.
The couple spends their summer vacation making repairs and building around the house. For this purpose they bought a Logosol M7 sawmill, not only for economic reasons.
-We only use wood we have cut ourselves. It makes us independent and it is as locally produced as you can get, says Meino.
Access to their own wood also provides them the freedom to undertake more unusual projects. The latest is a roofed surround for their well. This little house is built following all the rules of the trade, using the Logosol M7 and log moulder. And finally, it was painted a colour that in Germany goes by the name of Sweden Red- in other words, the same as Falu red.
At the same time, the well served as preliminary practice for the next project. They plan to build a timbered, wood-heated sauna in the yard, but this will have to wait until their four-week summer vacation in summer of 2010.
Up until that point, all their time in Sweden will be spent training for Kristin and her dogs.
